The Babywearing Project

Do you have a gently-used sling or wrap that you'd like to donate to a good cause?

My family has started a charity where we distribute gently-used baby carriers to low-income families across the U.S.

If you'd like to donate yours, please mail them to:

Why Babywearing?

Benefits for Baby:

  1. Bonding and Attachment: Babywearing promotes strong emotional bonds between the caregiver and baby. Physical closeness fosters a sense of security and comfort, encouraging attachment and trust.
  2. Improved Sleep: Babies often sleep better when held close to their caregiver. The gentle motion of being carried can help soothe a baby to sleep, and the warmth and rhythm of the caregiver’s body promote relaxation.
  3. Enhanced Development: Being worn allows babies to observe the world from an adult's perspective, which stimulates cognitive and visual development. The movement also supports vestibular (balance) and muscle development.
  4. Reduced Crying: Babies tend to cry less when they are worn, as they feel comforted and reassured by the closeness of their caregiver.
  5. Physical Health: Babywearing can help improve posture and promote healthy hip development (especially when wearing baby carriers designed with ergonomic features).

Benefits for the Caregiver:

  1. Hands-Free Mobility: Babywearing allows caregivers to move freely while keeping their baby close. This can be especially helpful for tasks around the house or while running errands.
  2. Promotes Comfort: Many caregivers find babywearing to be more comfortable than using strollers, especially when navigating crowded places, uneven terrain, or stairs.
  3. Improved Posture and Mobility: Wearing a baby distributes their weight evenly, which can reduce strain on the caregiver’s arms and back, especially with ergonomic carriers that provide proper support.
  4. Facilitates Breastfeeding: Babywearing can make breastfeeding on-the-go easier, providing easy access for nursing without needing to find a private place to sit.
  5. Increased Confidence: Many caregivers find that babywearing increases their confidence in parenting, as it offers a sense of connection and reassurance. It also encourages a more responsive approach to the baby's needs.

Social and Emotional Benefits:

  • Family Connection: Babywearing can allow siblings, partners, or extended family members to bond with the baby in a way that feels natural and intimate.
  • Promotes Family Interaction: Babywearing allows caregivers to engage in social activities and interact with others while still meeting the needs of their baby.
